EARTH ARTWORK – GAIA – TO GO ON TEMPORARY EXHIBIT AT COBH CATHEDRAL

Well now you can get a very real sense as GAIA – Earth Artwork by Luke Jerram is coming to Cobh Catheral. Measuring seven metres in diameter GAIA will hang majestically in Ireland’s tallest Cathedral allowing all who visit to experience our planet, floating in three dimensions.

The artwork is created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earths surface. The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface. Artist Luke Jerram aims to ‘give the public the opportunity to see the Earth as a sphere, floating in the darkness of space’ and hopes to ‘convey the fragility and beauty of our planet – our only home.’
